Scenic Train Ride


The train ride starts from Hatton railway station and goes on up to Haputale station through most beautiful terrains any country in the world can offer. On board the train that winds around and through the mountains, forests and tea plantations and by some beautiful waterfalls and water ways will give an unforgettable one of a kind travel memory that will remain a highlight of the tour to Sri Lanka.

The tour starts with the drive to Hatton through less travelled beautiful mountainous terrain through Bogawantalawa valley and Caselreigh reservoir. You can view a colonial era stone church on the banks of the reservoir before you reach the Hatton railway station

Suggested Schedule

  • Leave from the glenrock by 10.30 am
  • Reach summer hut view point 11.15 am
  • Reach Castlereigh reservoir by 01.00 pm
  • Visit historic stone church by the reservoir
  • Reach Hatton railway station by 2.00 pm
  • Board the train at 2.30 pm
  • Get off at Haputhale station at 5.45 pm
  • Arrive at the glenrock by 6.30 pm.
  • Total distance – 166 km (round trip)

Transport Charges

  • The hotel can connect you to a local third party transport provider: They need at least two day prior notice. However may sometimes be available on demand.

  • If more distance is travelled than 166 km, additional charges apply( US$ 0.55 per extra km)

  • If you need a guide from the glenrock additional US$ 40 applies(Subject to availability)
  • Travel by your own vehicle free of charge
  • Please note that the observation compartment or the luxury compartment must be reserved well in advance. (However it might be available at the last minute) OR; You may be able to travel in the second class (seats not guaranteed, facilities not of the best quality) or third class (no seats guaranteed , low quality)
